ECL 2019 Season 1 Invitational Preview

This is it! The culmination of 3 months of blood, sweat, and smashed keyboards or touchscreens; the ECL 2019 Season 1 Invitational! 16 players fought their way through but only one can take home the title of champion and a guaranteed spot at our Players’ Championship later this year.

The tournament will kick off with a pre-show around 11:30 am EDT on Sunday March 31st. You can tune in over at twitch.tv/thegreatparliament. Before we get to know the players let’s look at the tournament and how we’ll crown our champion.

Format

Players will submit single deck to play across both stages. They will follow normal Eternal deckbuilding rules. Homecoming is legal too! All matches will be best of five and use the forced play/draw rule. The rule is that after game one players will requeue each game until the loser of the previous game is on the play.

Stage 1: 4 double elimination groups of 4 people. Groups will be random seeding. Those that survive will continue to the top 8 and stage 2.

Stage 2: Players will be seeded into the top 8 based on their record in stage 1. These will be single elimination matches.

What’s on the Line?

1st place- Title of Invitational Champion, invite to the Players’ Championship, and 40% of the prize pool at tournament end

2nd place- 15 ECL League points and 30% of the prize pool at tournament end

3rd/4th place- 10 ECL League points and 15% of the prize pool at tournament end

5th through 8th place- 5 ECL League points

If you’d like to donate to the prize pool for FREE head over to Matcherino and use the code ECL19S1 to donate $.50. Other free options via page visits, follows, etc. on the site as well.

Competitors

Player’s are listed in order by Sunday direct invite winners then at-large highest point earners. I asked the players to answer a few questions so we could learn a little more about them. Many are free agents and looking to sign with a team or start their own.

YurickYu- Sunday winner

Team Affiliation: Free Agent

Favorite Deck/Archetype: Unitless Control

What winning the invitational means to you: Show to other Brazilians that we have a chance in this game. I really want to see more players that speak Portuguese be pro in Eternal.

One of two players to crack the 60-point threshold this season and truly embrace the grinder mentality. That was after winning our first direct invite Sunday event. YurickYu never shied away from off-meta brews either, bringing hits like 150 card merchant/smuggler cargo only decks.

NotoriousGHP- Sunday winner

Team Affiliation: Team Rankstar

Favorite Deck/Archetype: Control or Aggro combo (Like Haunted Highway), favorite deck = Haunted Highway

What winning the invitational means to you: Although I’ve been a prominent name in the competitive scene for a very long time, I have struggled to close out major events. Winning this would prove to myself that I can do this, while also knowing I am that much closer to a bringing a championship home to Team Rankstar

The terror of the highway himself needed only 1 tournament to qualify but will still be a fearsome opponent to face.

DrPringles- Sunday winner

Team: The Great Parliament

Favorite Deck/Archetype: Haunted Highway

What winning the invitational means to you: Winning both ECL and ETS Invitationals in one Season

Another Haunted Highway expert in the field. They took down the ETS invitational with the deck. Will they try to do the same here and go 2 for 2?

Kroge- Sunday winner

Team: The Great Parliament

Favorite Deck/Archetype: FJS and subsets (I made #1 on ladder with Stonescar and won my ETS’s with Argenport and Rakano)

What winning the invitational means to you: I am not sure I will be able to play much on Sundays, so securing the spot would be very nice

Our other player to pace the field with 60+ points this season. Known for all flavors of FJS but will Svetya’s homecoming have them rethinking their strategy?

Aromanova- Sunday winner

Team: The Great Parliament

Favorite Deck/archetype: Aggressive Combo, Miracle Blitz/ Scream

What winning the invitational means to you: Showing that even though I'm not around much anymore I'm still able to play at the top level and obviously representing TGP

We haven’t seen much of Aromanova this year, but they are back, refreshed, and ready to snuff out the competition. The question is how much rust will they need to shake off.

Kristy- Sunday winner

Team Affiliation: Free Agent

Favorite deck/archetype: Rakano aggro, but I can always go for some Combrei

What winning the invitational means to you: I would feel proud of myself for accomplishing something like this on my own. It would show I am dedicated to always improving and doing my best, even in a card game.

Kristy’s first and only appearance on the ECL circuit was in the last week of the season. Being new didn’t stop them from running the table and going undefeated that day. Can they pull off the same feat here?

Marvin_the_imp- At large berth

Team Affiliation: Team Not Tavrod

Favorite deck/archetype: FJS, but Chalice occupies a special place in my heart. It was my first deck I crafted when I started playing Eternal. Favorite archetype would be midrange, Elysian preferably

What winning the invitational means to you: I've never won a tournament before, so winning this would be amazing. There are far better players competing in the tournament than I am, so for me to win this would mean you all had a really bad day.

Marvin’s never been one to talk highly of themselves but don’t let the mild manners deceive you. Marvin finished the regular season with 43 points, a top 5 finish on the leaderboards. Don’t underestimate them or any of this relatively unknown team who we will see more of later.

Mrmeeseeks- At large berth

Team Affiliation: Free Agent

Favorite deck/archetype: Temporal Control

What winning the invitational means to you: Just playing in this event allows me to have a challenge against many players I respect. So, winning it would make me proud.

Mrmeeseeks comes into the invitational 6th on the overall point leaderboard. They’re relatively new to the community run circuits, making their debut on ECL and ETS this year. That didn’t stop them from qualifying for both invitationals though!

Kangbreath- At large berth

            Team Affiliation: Free Agent

            Favorite Deck/Archetype: Burn Queen/tempo

What winning the invitational means to you: That I woke up on time.

Kang has become infamous for high level competitive play using only cards they open from packs. Training weights make you stronger right? Fortunately for them its been a while since set 5 dropped and Homecoming only requires some gold to get all the cards.

JockeD- At large berth

Team Affiliation: Free Agent

Favorite deck/archetype: various midrange strategies

What winning the invitational means to you: just another day in the eternal office

Not much is known about JockeD other than they appear to play the game for fun and prizes be damned! Will this laid-back attitude give them an edge in pressure situations?

SolventSoup- At large berth

Team: Free Agent

Favorite Deck(s): OG Shimmerpack Dad, Combrei Ramp, dummy thicc Time Midrange decks

What winning the invitational means to you: I'm just going to take it one game at a time and try to have fun.

SolventSoup looks to have the “I’m just happy to be here” attitude. One of their favorite decks won the last ECQ though. Maybe that will motivate them to a high finish.

Lysxx- At large berth

Team: Free Agent

Favorite Deck/Archetype: Haunted Highway by far. The deck has so many interesting decisions and possible lines of play, and it's also insanely good

What winning the invitational means to you: It's been a lot of fun taking Eternal from a casual hobby to something I think about more seriously and winning the invitational would prove I can take my play to the next level.

Another relative unknown player looking to breakout on the big stage, and another Haunted Highway fan. We’ve seen Lysxx bring a wide variety of decks so who knows what they’ll bring to the Homecoming dance.

JacenBlare- At large berth

Team Affiliation: Free Agent

Favorite Deck/Archetype: Jennev Midrange/Value Midrange

What winning the invitational means mean to you: Prove to myself that I can play well and consistent against some of the best players in Eternal currently.

JacenBlare snuck in with an at-large berth but that doesn’t make them any less dangerous. I’ve seen them lurking in all the Twitch channel so you can be sure they’ve done their homework.

PapaCapricorn- At large berth

Team Affiliation: Technically, I play for Team Zodiac - but I am the only member. Most of my community interaction happens through Shiftstoned

Favorite Deck/Archetype: I enjoy playing Big Midrange and (against better judgement) spend a lot of time trying to find a way to make that archetype work in Auralian. Here's to hoping some of the new cards from Homecoming will make that a more viable goal

What winning the invitational means to you: I've taken down a few of ECL's more casual events and previously qualified for a couple of invitationals that I couldn’t attend for various reasons. A top 8 or better finish in the event would certainly be nice, but I'm gratified to just be able to participate this time.

More known for their work on Shiftstoned and general memery, Papa has certainly focused more on having fun and community. We’ll see if they can go on a streak and beat their expectations.

Kross- At large berth

Team Affiliation: Team Not Tavrod

Favorite Deck/Archetype: Every possible Hooru deck

What winning the invitational means to you: I try to give my best in every single game, I play to win, and I play for even bigger challenges. Winning an invitational is the perfect payoff for all the hard work me and my team did in the last 2 months.

Kross has been a staple in the competitive scene for a while now. No big finishes yet to my knowledge but now they have a solid team behind them. Will this be Kross’ big moment?
